How best to maximise social, environmental and economic impact from design in innovation (DIN) interventions?
This study, commissioned by Innovate UK Knowledge Transfer Network Design Innovation Advisory Board in 2022, offers current insight into these, and other design in innovation related questions.
System design and user-centred design techniques were embraced to conduct the study. We would like to thank everyone from across the design and innovation ecosystem who participated in interviews, workshops and the open survey for their insights and enthusiasm.

How best to maximise the mutual value created through strategic scientific relationships between a technology rich multi-national and global academic university partners?
A wide ranging global review was undertaken including interviewing senior stakeholders on 'both sides' from different countries (with different expectations and ways of working) and reviewing secondary sources of evidence.
Ultimately, 21 key recommendations were made - a number of which were in themselves quite challenging to the status quo - but all of which were adopted by the multinational.
Subsequently, a series of training courses were commissioned by the client which we designed and delivered to their Relationship Managers. This successfully embedded the recommended new ways of working.
As an associate of Viadynamics Ltd. and Zuas Ltd., and working with the Core Team from across the six Northern Accelerator partner universities (Durham, Newcastle, Northumbria, Sunderland, Teesside and York), we devised & delivered the Future Founders Accelerator for academics from both STEM and SHAPE disciplines.
The programme supports delegates to explore, build & accelerate their enterprise opportunities and personal entrepreneurial & commercial capabilities.
Cohort 1 began in January 2020 as a face-to-face set of 1 -day workshops delivered over a 6 week period. A swift COVID-induced pivot to virtual delivery was made for Cohorts 2 and 3 (we learnt a lot!). Post COVID, we adopted a mixed model for cohorts 4 to 7 - capitalising on the benefits of both virtual and face-to-face delivery.
We received exceptionally positive feedback from all cohorts across all elements of the programme, with 95% of delegates ‘strongly agreeing’ with the statement “I’d recommend this course to colleagues”.
Our favourite feedback was this quote from a senior academic delegate on Cohort 3:
"This has been the most thought provoking, motivating, well organised, useful and thoroughly enjoyable course I have attending in years. Vanessa and Nick are incredibly knowledgable and bring practical, specific advice to each different idea.
They went above and beyond and supported us between training sessions and seem genuinely interested in not just our science and ideas but us as people too. I cannot recommend this course - and them - highly enough".
